Do You
Remember?
Drawings of events and people remembered from his early life by Rochdale artist George Mainwaring. Originally published as a popular series in the Saturday edition of the Rochdale Observer, 1970-1971, this is the first time the drawings can be seen as a collection.
George Mainwaring
A mill worker, policeman, Ministry of Food Enforcement Officer, transport manager, writer, an award-winning scout leader, husband, father, grand and great grandfather, and an artist.
Born in 1907 to working class parents in Rochdale, as one of 14 children, money, food and opportunities were hard to come by. As a result, at the age of 12, George went to work as a “half timer” at John Bright’s cotton mill. A year later his education ended and he became a full-time working man.
Do You Remember…
“Jacks and Dobbers”?
“Another old English children’s game played only by girls on the pavement was “Five Stones”, known in Lancashire as “Jacks and Dobbers”, using four varied coloured cubes made of pottery and a small ball, also of pottery.”
About George
George had a facility to catch an individual person’s mannerism or way of doing a job in a simple drawing. This collection certainly shows individuals who made a lasting impression on him.

“The War Effort”?
“In Rochdale, the effect was terrific when the tank, DRAKE 127, was driven under its own power on to the Town Hall Square from Rochdale Station and parked outside the Central Hotel for a week from 8th to 13th April 1918.”
